Synonym Lists⚓︎

Available with: KNOWRON Core

Every organization develops its own internal language over time — abbreviations, shorthand, department-specific names, and alternative terms for the same concept. Synonym Lists let you teach KNOWRON this vocabulary so that search works the way your teams actually talk, not just the way a general-purpose system expects them to.

Why this matters⚓︎

When a technician searches for an internal abbreviation or a team-specific term, KNOWRON needs to understand what they mean. Without synonyms configured, a search for "WO" might not surface results that consistently use "Work Order" — even though the two terms refer to exactly the same thing.

Synonym Lists solve this by mapping your internal terms to their equivalents. Once configured, a search using any term in a synonym group will surface the same results as a search using any other term in that group — without requiring any changes to your existing content.

This is particularly useful for:

  • Internal abbreviations — terms your teams use every day that wouldn't be understood outside your organization
  • Shorthand used in service, maintenance, or support contexts
  • Multiple names for the same component or concept — especially when different teams or regions use different terminology
  • Organization-specific product or part names that don't appear in any general dictionary

What you don't need to add⚓︎

You don't need to add standard translations between KNOWRON's supported languages, or widely known general terms. The system already handles those natively. Synonym Lists are specifically for terminology that is unique to your organization.

How to set up synonyms⚓︎

The setup process works in collaboration with your Customer Success contact:

  1. Your Customer Success contact provides a spreadsheet template
  2. You fill in the terms that should be treated as equivalent during search
  3. Your Customer Success contact handles the import and applies the mappings to your search index

That's it. Your existing content doesn't need to be edited — the synonyms are applied at the search layer, transparently to users.

Work with your teams

The people closest to the work — technicians, service staff, support teams — are often the best source of synonyms. Ask them what terms they use when searching and what they expect to find. The most valuable synonym entries are the ones that reflect real search behavior, not just documented terminology.
